General Information

Vieste is a town in the province of Foggia of 13,845 inhabitants. It has been repeatedly awarded the Blue Flag award of the Foundation for Environmental Education, the quality of its sea. It is part of the Gargano National Park and the Mountain Community of the Gargano. Vieste is the easternmost city of the Gargano. The inhabitants are called Vieste Vieste. Vieste is the most popular tourist city of the Gargano, and is called the pearl of Gargano. Vieste is known around the world, and each year attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world.

Geography

|
The heart of the city of Vieste is on a small rocky peninsula is characterized by two peaks: Punta San Francesco, facing east, home to the medieval village of Punta Santa Croce, to the north, which today houses the port of Vieste. Between these two points there is the small beach of Marina Piccola. At the southern tip of San Francisco, we have the long sandy beach known throughout the world as the beach Pizzomunno. Finally, west of the tip of Santa Croce, is the beach of San Lorenzo.

Archaeological Finds

|
The many sites and artefacts found in Vieste and its surroundings show the population of the territory since the Paleolithic period. The areas most frequented by prehistoric man are Vallecoppe, Campi, Costella, Puntalunga, Macchione, Passo Arciprete, Defensola, Molinella and Sfinalicchio. In places Defensola, about three km from Vieste, was the discovery of Europe's largest prehistoric flint mine. Near the castle are visible remains of Iron Age tombs.

History
|
|
After the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire, Vieste was dominated by the Lombards. Then there was the Norman-Swabian period, then the Bourbon of Anjou and then to the unification of Italy. In 1236, Vieste was heavily looted by the Venetians. In 1554 however, after yet another incursion by the Turks, Dragut Rais beheaded on Chianca Amara thousands of Vieste. Each year the event is commemorated with an event attended by thousands of tourists. Vieste was bishopric between 993 and 1817.

The Pizzomunno and the Trabucchi

|
The Cathedral is located in one of the highest areas of Vieste. The Castle is on a limestone cliff overlooking the sea and is currently used by the army. The symbol of Vieste is a monolith that rises on south beach about 25 meters high and said Pizzomunno known by tourists from around the world. Along the coast of Vieste, you can see some strange constructions such Trabucchi: fishing facilities equipped with long arms that support a network of wood is still used for fishing.

Events and Entertainment

|
On May 9th is the Feast of Santa Maria di Merino, protector of Vieste. This festival attracts hundreds of Vieste around the world. The duration of the celebrations is 4 days.
On April 23 is the feast of St. George. During this festival, there is the traditional horse race on the beach of Pizzomunno.
The first Saturday in September is the feast of Santa Maria Stella Maris. Very characteristic for the statue is transported by boat. The faithful follow the procession from the shore.
